Create a plant journal

There may be all sorts of apps or notes features in your phone to track your plant progress, but a good old fashion notebook is a useful option to.

For starters, with a journal you can glue or tape the seed packets right on to the page.

This way you have any grow instructions saved to look at plus the pretty pictures on the packaging.

Next write in the names, or draw, the types of flowers or plants you are growing.

Then leave space for tracking milestones.

This may sound silly at first but once you get in the habit, it will be fun to see how things change over time.

You can also include photographs for more visual elements.

The choice is really up to you what you would like to include as you create a plant journal.

But here are some ideas to get started!

Begin with what you hope to accomplish with your garden.

This may take some time to think about what your goals are, both big and small.

For example, are you a first time plant-owner who just wants to begin the world of horticulture?

Or are you growing herbs with the purpose of seasoning meals.

Or planting vegetables to be able to eat in the Fall or preserve for future use.

What ever your reason is, write it down!

If you are looking for a journal that is strong and sturdy for all of your gardening needs, I highly recommend this:

Feela Brand Journal Kit*

There are over 200 pages in a durable binding, plus it comes with accessories like fine point markers, stickers, washi tape, and more.

I use this notebook set for my journal with me videos and I have been able to preserve so many various pieces of paper, artwork, and seed packets.

After you have written or added a visual, of what you will be growing, make a note of when you planted the seeds.

Another important thing to jot down is in what pot or garden bed you started the seeds.

This way you know what is growing, and where, around your home.

Next make notations of instructions.

Does it need full sun or partial sun? Water daily or every once in awhile? What temperatures are best? Etc.

Create a plant journal

Depending on the flower, herb, vegetable, or plant the growth rate will vary.

Check back daily, every couple days, or weekly to follow along the growth progress.

In your notebook write out any thing you see.

Get excited about every little leaf’s progress!

Keep track the best you can of all conditions impacting your plant (sunlight, temperature, water) etc. and how it may be effecting it.

Feel free to measure the height or width of your plant. (maybe this is why people call them plant babies!)

This way you can track improvements that you may not notice by eye at a glance.

If there are signs of decline, of course make note of that.

Because even if you can’t fix it this go-around, it will help you prepare for the next time.

Other things to consider are coloring of the plant.

For example, with certain house plants if the leaves turn yellow, they are dying and it is best to remove them.

When your flowers, plants, herbs, veggies, or anything you grow reaches the point you want it be at, celebrate!

Write in your plant journal about your accomplishment.

Describe what the plant looks like, what conditions it thrived on, if you transferred it’s location at all, where it seems to be “happiest” and any other factors you can think of!

If you experimented with different types of seeds, be sure to make note of that as well.

By using a journal you can track the whole gardening process and refer to it later on down the line if you need guidance.
