Preserving Memories for Future Generations

A creative way to save memories is with a personal story journal.

This could be a reflection of your past, note taking of present day, future goals, or a combination of all three.

You could either have multiple journals or get have one large notebook divided in to multiple sections.

I personally enjoy Bullet Journal* notebooks for memory keeping. They are quite sturdy with over 200 pages and have bookmark ribbons.

But no matter what type of book you choose, any option is a great start!

So let’s get in to some ideas.

When creating your notebook, you have lots of options to choose from.

You could do all written entries, incorporate pictures like a scrapbook, or you can make a junk journal.(link to a blog about those below!)

Here are some more ideas to get started:

  • Daily diary entries
  • Write excerpts of past experiences
  • Create a scrapbook with pictures, notes, and mementos
  • Start a life story photo album*
  • Design a junk journal
  • Get a bullet journal* and create pages with various writing prompts and trackers
  • Decide on a theme of focusing on the past, present, future, or all 3
  • Another theme option is a goals/accomplishments tracker
  • Create a journal to glue or tape in cards or letters
  • Start a family history book *focused on your genealogy (ancestors/family tree)

You may be wondering where you should get started.

Creating a journal all about you and your life may seem like an overwhelming task.

But it doesn’t need to be and I really encourage you to simply have fun with this project.

So here are some writing prompts or ideas to start the process:

    • Get out a piece of paper and brainstorm all the general concepts of what memories you would like to save
    • In another section note special memories that you want to elaborate on
    • Once you begin thinking of ideas you will likely quickly think of more
    • Write about people that influenced you (family, friends, teachers, mentors, even pets!)
    • If you are thinking of journaling in a timeline, try to break down memories by age or year. Which ever is easier.
    • Think back to your personal family history but also of family stories, legends, and heritage you know from others
    • Write about your proudest moments or accomplishments
    • What makes you who you are: personality, hobbies, interests, etc.

Like I said earlier, once you get the ball rolling, chances are more and more ideas, concepts, and memories will come to you for your personal story journal.

Once you start thinking of ideas for creating your personal story journal, more creative concepts will follow!

Another extra thought, is maybe use a voice recording device like your phone to ramble off ideas you want to journal about.

Sometimes ideas and memories come to us faster than we can write.

I hope this article was a helpful starting point to begin preserving your unique life story.

    Happy Journaling!
