Preserving Memories for Future Generations

This blog article is about sharing social media accounts featuring lost family photographs.

These tips can hopefully help you find pictures of your loved ones, and enjoy seeing other family history stories.

While the internet can at times be filled with such negative content, I try to engage and interact with only positive friends, pages, or groups that bring joy and value.

It’s amazing how many different niches of special interests and topics are out there on social media!

I will break this down by platform and link a few genealogy themed accounts for each.

Instagram

Of all the social media platforms, Instagram is my favorite one to hang out on. I enjoy being able to quickly scroll through to see fun photo content, and find new followers using hashtags.

Usually before bed I scroll through stories. I feel like it only takes a few minutes to catch up with my friends’ day and what they are up to.

(I admit a few times I have fallen asleep with my phone in my hand and have no clue how many reels I watched LOL So that’s a bit of a bad habit!)

Anyway, enough about all that.

Vintage Photo Accounts

So these instagram accounts are some of my absolute favorite! They range in the theme of sharing old unclaimed lost photos and family history.

SecretLifeOfNell

Bio, “Reinventing forgotten memories, one found photo at a time.” And there is also a YouTube channel featuring found videos! https://www.youtube.com/@secretlifeofnell

What I love about this account is seeing all these pictures that may have been lost in history.

The captions included are also hilarious in my opinion!

CouplesOfThe1940s

Bio, “A history page dedicated to the couples of the 1940’s! Established 2017, resurrected 2022. DM me submissions, anytime!!”

So I just came across this account recently and I instantly started following.

Photos of couples are collected and shared with details of who each person is and a little bit about them.

What really gets me with these pictures, is seeing the time period of how moments are captured. Many of the photos look just like ones that I have from my family.

AnonymousPhotoProject

Bio, “Founded by Lee Shulman https://www.anonymous-project.com/en

The organizers of this account collect and preserve colored slides from the past 70 years and share the memories that could have been forgotten.

It provides the opportunity for lost family photographs to be brought to light.

Many Kodachrome slides sit in boxes, out of sight and never viewed. They aren’t as accessible as already created photo albums. (recommendation below for digitization)

GraveAdventuresOf_NurseJenni

Bio, “Documentation of my visits to cemeteries in OH”

I know cemeteries are not something that everyone is the most comfortable with. They can be unsettling or bring up difficult emotions.

However I find value in seeing cemetery headstones because it preserves the memory of a life forever.

This account features pictures and portraits displayed on memorials. This truly shows you who the person was and goes beyond the standard name and date.

    Facebook Groups

    Postcards of the United States

About, “A community group for sharing postcards sent From and To the United States of America. Postcards help connect family and friends, and assist genealogists on their search for answers.”

This is a group I originally created awhile back and there are only a few members for now but I hope more can join in the future!

The pictures featured on a postcard and notations on the writing side can provide lost photographs and information to help with family research.

    Heirloom Show & Tell

About, “Welcome to Heirloom Show & Tell! We invite you to share photos, heirlooms, and the stories behind them that have been passed down in your family for generations.”

This group is fun one to see all the special heirloom pieces and cherished items that other families love so much.

The discussions about these treasures is insightful too! It’s funny how possessions can be super rare, or it was a trend and many families have the same thing. (A ceramic Christmas tree comes to mind!)
