A new month is here but also a brand new year so let’s start it out right with a new notebook and some January Journal Ideas!
I think many of us are excited for the fresh start of a new year.
The holiday season comes to a close and we are all on to the next chapter.
And there’s nothing like cracking open a brand new planner or journal!
(for a list of my favorite journal supplies, check out this article: Gift Ideas for Journal Lovers)
So let’s jump in to some journal writing prompts!
Reflecting on the Past Year
As the previous year comes to a close, it can be nice to reflect back with these questions:
- What are you most grateful for?
- What is something new you learned?
- What hobbies did you start?
- What changed in your life? (personal, professional, career, school, relationships, etc.)
- List some of your favorite moments of the previous year!
- What was a difficult situation you navigated through?
- Do you feel the year overall was happy or sad? Maybe a mix of both
- How do you think you have grown as a person?

Journaling Thoughts for the New Year
Now that we have noted some thoughts for the past, let’s look ahead to the future:
- What are you looking forward to in the new year?
- What are you concerned about for the new year?
- Do you have any goals? (personal or professional)
- What steps or ideas do you have in mind to work towards those goals or aspirations?
- Are there any new projects or hobbies you’d like to try?
- Do you have a personal motto?
- List activities you’d like to do, people you’d like to spend time with, and places you’d like to go
