April 9th marks National Cherish an Antique Day! According to the Merriam-Webster dictionary, an antique is defined as existing since or belonging to earlier times, being in the style or fashion of former times, and made in or representative of the work of an earlier period. Antiques play a role in genealogy as they are often times a family heirloom that is passed down several generations. These objects can also help indicate a timeframe or location in which the antique originated.
Journal Prompt Questions:
- Do you own any antiques?
- What are the possessions?
- Did you purchase them yourself or were they given to you by someone?
- Where did the antiques come from? (country, state, town?)
- How old are the items?
- Do you have plans on who you wish to give the items to?
- What are the stories connected to these antiques?
- Do you keep any on display for decoration in your home?
- What is the value of these antiques?
While antiques can have substantial monetary value, often times their personal value is far greater. The items we own carry not only value but also memories of years gone by. We may picture these antique items in various homes over the years and connected to several loved ones. They each carry a story that you can now record for future generations.
