Preserving Memories for Future Generations

For creating a friendship journal first think of the person you feel the closest too.

Maybe this is someone from your childhood years, or a college relationship, a co-worker, or someone you met at a community group.

However your connection you began you have remained friends for all these years, whether that be a short time or decades.

Society often focuses on romantic relationships or engagement in the work place with colleagues.

But what about true, natural friendships that develop over time and evolve with life changes.

That’s why this blog article is centered around journaling about the special memories with those we love.

What do you put in a Friendship Journal?

While there is clearly no specific structure for how you set up your personal notebook, I can share some ideas to get you started.

Writing prompts will be next but first gather some items that tell the story of your friendship.

These can be any sort of items that bring back memories but can also fit in a notebook or scrapbook.

Sentimental Examples:

  • Photos
  • Letters
  • Postcards
  • Tickets (movies, museums, amusement parks, concerts)
  • Receipts from items you shopped for together
  • Thin costume jewelry that could be glued or taped on to page
  • Fabric swatches, threads, or buttons from outfits you wore to a special event
  • Print outs of funny text messages
  • Voicemails converted to audio line visuals and printed
  • Movie disc in an envelope of highlight videos of special moments together
  • Bookmarks if you went to a book release (Harry Potter & Twilight throwback! Do people still attend things like that!?)
  • Clips from your favorite magazines or movie/tv stars your liked
  • Name tags from first day of school, college, event together
  • Little mementos or trinkets of experiences

Let’s begin at the foundation of your friendship and work our way through.

    • How did you meet?
    • How old were you then versus now?
    • How many years have you been friends?
    • Do you have any friends in common? (either currently or in the past)
    • What are your favorite activities to do together?
    • Do you currently live close by or far away?
    • How do you stay in touch at a distance? (texting, calls, video chats, letters)
    • What life changes have you gone through together?
    • What happy and tough times have they helped you with?
    • What are your favorite experiences and memories together?
    • What are some of your favorite past times?
    • Do you share a bond over music, books, movies?
    • What do you hope to share in the future? (college, married life, work, motherhood/fatherhood, parenting, retirement, etc.)
    • Write some words of encouragement your friend has given you, and that you share with your friend.
