What are Clippings on Newspapers.com
Clippings are a form of digitally saving a section of a newspaper page.
Just like you would physically cut out an article with scissors if it were printed on paper.
How to Search for an Article
On the homepage of Newspapers.com you will see text boxes that you can type in.
- Start with a ‘keyword’ such as the name of a person or event.
A keyword is required to place a search.
- Next there is the option to enter a ‘date.’
I recommend starting specific and then broadening the date if needed.
For example: July 23 1890 to July 1890, even more broad- year 1890
- The next option is for ‘location.’
Again, I suggest starting with a specific city/town, county, state, country. Then broadening to just the state and country.
Lastly, click the search magnify glass symbol!
Newspaper Results
Okay now you will see a new page with a list of results.
Scroll through until you find something related to what you are looking for.
(If you can’t find anything, try editing your search inquiry)
You will see a square with a view of the old newspaper, the name of the paper in blue colored font, then the page number, location, and date.
There may also be a note like “1 of 5 matches on this page”
Click the newspaper image to open up the full page spread.
Any text highlighted in yellow should be a match to your keyword.

How to Make Clippings on Newspaper Articles
As you view the newspaper spread you can zoom in and out with the + (plus) and – (minus) signs on the screen.
Once you find the article you would like to save, click the word “clip.” It shows a pair of scissors next to the word.
- A box with perforated lines and blue circles will pop up.
- Click and drag the box over the article you want to save.
- Click the blue circles and drag them to the corners of the article, to capture the whole piece
There will be some text box options where you can type in details, such as a title and tags.
This helps you to stay organized with what each clipping on Newspapers.com is and who it is connected to for your family tree.
The next step is to select “save clip.”
Where to Save the Newspaper Article
The clipping will be saved to your newspapers.com account to access in the future.
But you also have the options to select: “Print/Download” “Share” or “Save to Ancestry”
I recommend downloading the clipping to your computer so that incase you ever cancel your subscription, you will still have the articles.
The share option is for social media, email, copy/pasting the link, etc.
If you have a family tree on Ancestry.com you also have the opportunity to save the clipping to a relative.
Accessing Clippings on Newspapers.com
To go back and view all of your saved articles in your account, simply click “Clippings” at the top of the page next to your username.
This will bring you to an archive page of everything you have clipped and saved!
