Preserving Memories for Future Generations

Well the time has come! The 1950 census is available from the United States National Archives! Here are some helpful tips for finding your ancestors.

You will see options to select/ type in- location (state/county/city), name (first and/or last), enumeration district, or Indian Reservation Schedule.

Next it is important to note that some names are incorrect in their spelling, both on the census itself and the digital transcription. My recommendation would be to start by the location at which your ancestors lived.

Once you enter the location, you will see a list of options organized by Enumeration Districts. (This is an area that could be covered by a single census taker in one time frame.) To see the census record for the District, click “Population Schedules” it shows a highlight in a blue/green color.

An image should open showing the census for that area. To turn to the next page click the left and right arrows, to zoom in or out, scroll your computer mouse back and forth.

The top of the census outlines what categories are included. For example, name of street, house number, names, relationship, etc.

To download a full image of the census, click the ellipsis (3 dot menu), click ‘download’, click the size you prefer, then click ‘close.’ The image should automatically download to your computer.
